So, I guess this is where you go to get a really good Italian beef sandwich? Yeah, imagine me saying that with an upward inflection, because I'm not sold. Jay's has a cult-like following when it comes to these, especially amongst us living on the northwest side. Normally I'm giddy when I walk into a place and they have huge rolls of paper towels on each table. It usually means I'm about to eat something good and messy. But it was more messy than good. I think toilet paper would have been more appropriate. I'm not a huge fan of Italian beefs as it is. Damn, I just heard a noise. Oh, that was just the sound of my Chi-town card being stripped away from me. Whatever. I also hate Jim Belushi. Don't get me wrong, I get the sporadic craving. For beefs, not Jim Belushi. But the way people talk this place up, I was hoping it would change my perception, at least a little. But instead, I still stand indifferent with the whole Italian beef delicacy. Even independent from that, Jay's let me down entirely. I swear I've had better beef at birthday parties that had catering from some rag ass restaurant that nobody has heard of. So where did it go wrong for me? Well the giardiniera was an absolute abomination. It was too damn salty, and even worse, the "hot" giardiniera was awfully mild. I would go as far as to say that killed the entire sandwich. Giardinera is important to me. I need that heat. Normally it makes an average sandwich better. But for the first time, it made an average sandwich very insipid and weak. The Italian sausage was overcooked as well (I ordered the combo). Also, the french fries are not very fresh. And the employees aren't big into cleanliness or courteousness. My advice is if you're craving Italian beef, go to Johnnie's. Heck, I'd even over pay for two Portillo's expensive, tiny ass sandwiches. At least it tastes better, and you wont have to worry about acquiring salmonella. Jay's depresses me. Keep it.

These are the moments that memories are made of... eating Beef. (Corny Alert?!) But in all honesty, I was in town visiting, we were starving, and Jay's Beef was in the area, so let's do it! I think it was my first time eating in so I was able to see how much people love this local joint (which if you've read any of my other reviews, I live for local dives!). There were a few gentlemen that were working the back, one of which was really making an effort to interact with everyone that came in. He gave out free lemon ice to the kids, he was really enjoying himself, which is nice to see someone enjoying what they do. So I stand firm that Jay's Beef is selling much more than beef, they are selling smiles. (Ok. Last Corniness)

Where do I begin? The Italian beef sandwich is the best I've ever tried, and being a flight attendant, I've had Italian beef sandwiches from other states. None of them come close to Jay's! They pack the meat in their sandwiches and their giardinara pepper is so delicious! I used to eat at Jay's at least once a week when I lived in Chicago. Now I live in San Diego and I have to fly to Chicago just to eat this delicious Italian beef sandwich! I wish they had a Jay's Beef in San Diego, CA. I would definitely eat there all the time! I highly recommend this place!

Top notch service and food. Guys like this are hard to come by. So friendly and genuine . First time I have been there and I'll be back next time I'm in the area . Thank you !!

Best beef sandwich in town!!! Hands down!!! If you're a Chicagoan and you prefer another beef joint, have at it. If you have just moved here and live near a Jays Beef....try it. Combo is the best. Au jus is great.

Grew up near the Harwood Heights location when it was just a wooden shack. Now live in Schiller Park. Was best beef then as it is now, really genuine. Not too salty like Portillo's and not too bland like the others. Great fries too. Apparennly I must've grown immune to the money handling/ not washing hands thing.

I really wanted to be on the bandwagon with Jays Beef s but I just cant. I have been to both northwest side locations and they are just over rated and typically not satisfying. I will say that many things bother me about Jays but none more than clear lack of hygiene and cleanliness in the restaurants. I am not saying the restaurant itself is unclean I am saying the staff makes mistakes. They have handled money then food then money then food and never washed their hands...the worst part is they had gloves on so they think they are being clean! That kind of thing lets the mind wander as to what they think they are doing right but in fact they are doing completely wrong. It sucks because they guy that I saw do this on multiple visits is one of the nicest guys. He is your typical Chicago stand guy with the small talk and a bit of attitude. As for food the beef is over rated... Typically it is a bit overcooked or tuff, I will say the soggy bun is probably the best part of a Jays beef. I have had Hot Dogs and they are good, same with Pizza Puffs and Mozzarella Sticks, but its nothing 5 other local stands don't do equally as good. The parking lot is easy to use but small and they have a few benches outside when it's warm. All in all, I will not suggest this place but I am sure at some point I will eat here again because everyone else loves them...

I really wanted to love this place considering how close it is to my home. I had a beef and it was not good. There is no reason why a Chicago establishment should have bad giardiniera yet this place did. The meat on the beef was really dry plus the dry giardiniera did not help at all. My wife also had the beef and she did not like it. I'm not sure if I will give this place another chance considering there are better beef options not to far away.

I needed a chicago vienna beef fix... had just flown into O'Hare and was parked out at a remote site off Manheim. I drove down Irving Park Road and found Jays. Jay was working the counter and I asked how much for a hot dog and fries... he said $3.30 so I ordered one up. I added a diet coke and he brings me the bag saying he gave me a double dog as a bonus. ate the dog and fries on the highway and it was just what the doctor ordered. with the drink it was $5.10 and he gave it to me for $5 even. nice guy, good place, definitely a repeat in the area.

Awesome beef sandwich! I got mine with provolone and the hot peppers with the au jus on the side- I was shocked how much I liked it! Very flavorful, and cheap too!

Jay's Beef is awesome. The owner is usually there and he does a great job of running that place. Chicken sandwich is awesome.

  • John B.

This place is and has been for a while, VERY NASTY !!! It's dirty and the owner obviously doesn't care . Even his employees don't care anymore.. After 25 yrs of visiting this place, I will not go back. Enough said.

I'm from Southern California where one of the few known sandwiches is Philippe's French dip. Jay's Italian Beef blows that out of the water. No lines, quick service, good real man food. 'Nuff said!

Not the most amazing Chicago style food I have ever had, but not awful. A bit overpriced too. $22 for a beef, a polish, and 2 hot dogs. My boyfriend had the beef, he said it was good.. juicy.. but not the best he's eaten. The polish was pretty standard, I did like that the sport peppers were larger, but the fries they gave us were small portions and somewhat soggy. We didnt dine in, so I am unable to comment on the interior of the place.. but A-OK is a pretty accurate description.

Beef was very flavorful and juicy. Everything you want in am Italian beef. Hot pepper relish was awesome. Do NOT order a tamale - it was still in the plastic like it came from a convenience store.

Flew into Chicago for a couple days and was introduced to Jay's by my son. He has been a regular for years and just took me and Pete there as our final stop before returning to Kansas City. We were greeted by Frank and his crew and we instantly became a part of the family. I can see why Jay's is my son's regular stop. Italian beef with mild peppers for us and the great hot peppers for my son's grilled chicken sandwich. Regular size fries were plenty for two people and were just out of the fryer. Chicken sandwich was so good we ordered one to take home to KC. Big mistake , should have ordered two. On our next trip to Chicago Jay's will be our first stop. Can't wait.

Awesome place! Met Jay's son and he gave us the works as we are out of towners looking for that oh so famous Italian Beef. Everything was amazing and he have us a history on the restaurant. Loved seeing family businesses still in existence and the food was spectacular. Check out Jay's if you want a great bite

Solid Italian beef place. Good local beef place worth going to. I would say the gardinera was not impressive but everything else was awesome.

  • Andy M.

A small dumpy beef place that is popular with the locals. Real small with more seating outside and just basic foods that most can easily cook at home with better quality depending where you grocery shop. The place was a bit filthy inside despite many workers in the shop.

Defineteley in the upper echelon of Italian beefs in the City.IM PICKY ABOUT WHERE I EAT MY BEEFS!!!! I will NEVER just walk in and order a beef anywhere!!!! Or a hot dog for that matter!!! I only want THE BEST the city has to offer.I've been to Jay's multiple times.NUFF SAID!!!

Stopped in to Jay's Beef after landing at O'Hard. Ordered a chicken sandwich which was then placed on the grill for me. Asked for it a bit spicy, so they added some red pepper to sear with. Very tasty sandwich on tasty bread. Had a side of O Rings, and they were good as well. Piping hot. I have a love of all places named Jay.

Family owned spot, and I felt like I walked into their kitchen! The beef sandwich is PACKED with beef. One may likely choke if they try to take a whole bite. I had to eat in sections. Top. Bottom. Top. Bottom. It is a messy meal, make sure you grab extra napkins or come prepared with baby wipes. I'm not from this area but I do look forward too going back for another sandwich!

  • Reed N.

Yes indeed. Beef. Wet. Sweet. Please. Delicious and messy. A beef atomic bomb. Fries were crispy and tasty. Employees were attentive and hard working and friendly. I really appreciate the whole experience when it is my first stop coming out of O'hare staved and I am facing a three hour drive.

Very disappointed in this place. They handle your food with bare hands and then handle money and take the next person with out washing their hands. They have poor customer service. Their attitude is "get your s**t and get out". Now the attitude would be ok with me of their beefs were amazing but they are not worth the attitude.

One of the best damn beef sandwiches in the 'burbs! Love it when they dip it for you and it so juicy. I've brought some relatives here after picking them up from the airport, and they loved it.

Me & my brother come here often for lunch. The beefs are great. Generously portioned, but not overwhelmingly large. Fries are good. Pizza puffs are even good. Combo's, everything I've ever had here has been between fair and great. Friendly, fun service. Reasonable prices. Small dining area, so you might want to take your order to-go, depending if it's busy or not. Overall, good place for beefs.

Ordered the beef as I've always heard good things and now I see why. Not the best beef in the area, but definitely worth ordering again.

I'm impressed with the freshness of the food here. Good prices and portion sizes. I looooove the beeeefffff wellll doooone:]! I also like the fact I can get a burrito herel instead of just a burrito. Good, friendly service, high quality food. I'd like to see the addition of breakfast burrito's, like what you find out in the Schiller P. Yes Jay's Can!!

This place has gone to the dogs ever since it was taken over by its new owner. The beefs used to be better. The beef I had today was unspectacular to say the least. Usually the beefs are piled high with thinly shredded beef, today my beef looked as if it had gone through a meat grinder. I also ordered the fried mushrooms, which were falling apart due to being very soggy and tasted like the oil they were cooked in. Overall, I think Im done with Jay's. I could get a cheaper and better tasting beef sandwich at Johnnie's.

The beef sandwiches here are absolutely delicious. I been a regular of the Jay's Beef restaurants since 1995. To this day, I still have to have a beef from this place every Saturday. I recommend Jay's to anyone who has never tried an Italian beef sandwich. I also recommend trying the combo as well.

This is the quintessential Chicago Italian beef sandwich. We travelled all the way from Canada for one of these. Actually we came to visit my uncle but this was a must do on our trip. Hot and jucy and I really like the name.

Great food..great prices and the staff is super friendly. They are a great place to grab some lunch from. Not much of a dining room and even though it is busy I have never had a problem grabbing a table.

Jay's is a solid fast food joint who's beefs are worth the price of admission alone . The beefs are good sized , flavorful and very good. It's a smaller joint that is usually packed with what seem to be regulars. you can find hot dogs along with a few other fast food staples , but I really only come here for the beefs. The price is cheap , the service fast . Parking is available but when Irving is busy , it's almost impossible to cross it to hear east on Irving. Decent thin fast food regular fries. There is a little (very little) room to eat there , but ambiance is nonexistent here , take it home and enjoy.

  • Joshua A.

The food was good, but the employee handled my food then the money.....so something told me to wait and see if this guy washes his hands for the next customer and guess what he didn't....that's kinda nasty if you ask me

Beef's are ok.. But their grilled chicken sandwiches are AMAZING!!!
